Finding confidence through coaching: A personal journey

If you’d told me a year ago that coaching would impact my life beyond work, I wouldn’t have believed you. At the time, I was stuck in a cycle of self-doubt, struggling to navigate challenges and lacking the confidence to communicate effectively. I felt stuck—not just professionally, but personally as well.

I’ve never been the most confident person in the room. Speaking up in meetings, handling difficult conversations, or even just trusting my own decisions—it all felt overwhelming. I often second-guessed myself, worried about making mistakes, and felt like I wasn’t reaching my full potential. That was until I discovered coaching.

At first, I thought coaching was solely about career guidance or performance improvement. But coaching is something entirely different—it’s about personal growth, confidence-building, and unlocking potential in ways I never expected. And let me tell you, it has truly changed the way I approach not just work but life in general.

From the very first session, my coach made it clear that this wasn’t just about improving professional skills—it was about understanding myself better, identifying what was holding me back, and learning practical tools to move forward. It was about shifting my mindset and challenging the limiting beliefs that had been keeping me stuck for years.

One of the first things my coach helped me realise was that I had strengths—I just wasn’t seeing them clearly. Imposter syndrome had me believing I wasn’t good enough, but through guided discussions and exercises, I started to recognise the value I bring to the table. This self-awareness alone was a huge step toward feeling more secure in my abilities.

Before coaching, the thought of giving or receiving feedback or addressing conflicts made me anxious. I’d either avoid the conversation entirely or stumble through it, never quite getting my point across. My coach provided practical strategies for effective communication, active listening, and managing emotions during tough discussions. Learning how to approach these situations with confidence has made work—and life—so much easier. My coach often asked, “What’s the worst that could happen?” and when I really thought about it, the worst was usually just temporary discomfort. That realisation alone made such a difference.

The confidence I gained through coaching didn’t just stay at work—it started to impact my personal life too. I found myself speaking up in social situations, feeling more comfortable making decisions, and even handling personal conflicts with more clarity and ease. One of my greatest personal achievements through coaching was learning to embrace the unknown. Something as simple as taking a train to a place I’d never been before became an experience to enjoy rather than a source of anxiety. Another milestone was finding the confidence to walk into a crowded room and start a conversation without overthinking it.

If you’re feeling uncertain in your career, struggling with confidence, or just want to develop new skills to help you grow, coaching is absolutely worth considering. It’s not just about work—it’s about becoming the best version of yourself in all aspects of life. Coaching helps you uncover the strengths that were always there and equips you with the tools to navigate challenges with confidence.

Looking back, I wish I had done it sooner. But the important thing is that I took that step, and now, I feel more confident, capable, and ready for whatever comes next.
