Last week, I celebrated International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honouring women’s achievements and promoting gender equality. As a single mother, I feel proud to be part of the countless women who have overcome challenges and obstacles to achieve their goals.
Recently, I made the decision to re-enter the Health and Safety Administration field after working part-time at a supermarket for 13 years. My story is a testament to the resilience, determination, and hard work that many single mothers exhibit every day.
Fourteen years ago, I completed my IOSH Managing Safely certification for the first time in my first Health and Safety Administration position, which ignited my passion for Health and Safety. Unfortunately, when I became a mother for the second time, the company went into administration, so I decided to switch to part-time work to take care of my children while still pursuing my career goals.
Over the next 13 years, I worked part-time while continuing to learn about the latest developments in my field. Although re-entering into Health and Safety after such a long break was challenging, I persisted with determination and the support of family and friends. I had to update my skills and knowledge to match current industry standards and convince potential employers that my part-time work experience was relevant.
Luckily, I landed a position as Health and Safety Administrator at Chameleon Safety Services Ltd. With the support of Hayley, who has been a great inspiration to me. My experience as a single mother and part-time worker has proven to be an asset in my role as I have brought a unique perspective and skill set to the job.
As we celebrate international Women’s Day last week, it is essential to remember the challenges many women face, including single mother’s who balance careers and family responsibilities. We need to support and empower these women, providing them with resources and opportunities to achieve their goals and succeed in their careers.
My story is a reminder that with hard work, determination, and support, anything is possible. We can all learn from each other's experiences and strive to overcome the obstacles in our own lives, knowing that we too can achieve our dreams if we never give up.
